1 month anniversary…

Friday was my first vegan month birthday, and for me this concept is so natural that I even forgot about the date! But I cannot forget to congratulate myself for this accomplishment, and to thank all the people that make this so much easier; I have such good friends!

For this “blog party” I though about doing a journal with everything I ate this past month (great idea!) but to tell you the truth I didn’t eat no fancy vegan food, so I decided to make a list with all the vegan products that I got the chance to try out. 100% of them are SOOO GOOD!

Cookies: I’m obsessed for cookies, and I was so glad when I found out that I didn’t have to give up on them.

I know how a lot of people think that vegan sweets suck, but actually they are WAY better than the normal ones. The first one (by Alternative Baking Co.) is SOOO good, moist and fulfilling. The ones from Uncle Eddie’s are my favorite, since they are small and perfect (peanut butter and chocolate is the best cookie I ever had all my life). And the last one (by Dr. Lucy) is very good too, although is more dry than the others, but still pretty tasty. Healthy, tasty and cruelty free cookies, what else do I need? If I were you, I would rush to closest store in the list to get some, you won’t be disappointed.

Natural Cafe loc: 509 State St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101
Lazy Acres Market loc: 302 Meigs Rd, Santa Barbara, CA 93109
Starbucks loc: 800 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

They also sell online, but I love having lunch at Natural Cafe (outside in the sun, with my best-friends) and then having some perfect vegan desert. It’s up to you 😉

Main meals: I try to keep it simple, especially because I don’t have the patience to cook every single day, twice a day. I love to cook, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes is just nice to spend my time doing other things (watching True Blood, for example).

Veggie Burger (by GardenBurger) is the best vegan invention, REALLY! The veggies inside of it are so good, and the consistence is flawless. The Roasted Vegetable Pizza, No Cheese (by Amy’s Kitchen) is very unusual, and it’s a completely different pizza experience, light in the tummy and so good for the mouth. Amy’s soups are very good too, but I understand that a lot of people are not up for soup, I love it though. And bread… oh bread! What would I do without you? I like Alvarado St. Bakery because organic is the word that reins my vocabulary. Organic fruits, organic vegetables, organic supermarket, organic sugar… ORGANIC!!! Taste so much better, and with good plaining is not heavy in the pocket either. I know how expensive (and marvelous) Lazy Acres (or Whole Foods) is but there’s always good places around you that sell organics, just look harder. Did go to the Farmer’s Market closest to you? Research, ask, walk around, read about it… having information about what you eat is your choice. Think about it!

Deserts and Snacks: I’m definitely a desert and snack person! Sometimes I try to avoid it, but other times I just give in. Enjoying my food 🙂

Peanut Butter… with bread… The only thing I can say is: Gimme Some!! BTW that one is from Arrowhead Mills Organic (I told you, I really like organic). The pieces of peanuts make me crazy, and I love eating just the peanut butter most of the times.

The crunchy Banana Chips are a great option when you have nothing sweet to eat, or when you don’t want loads of sugar. Sunridge Farms doesn’t add white sugar or artificial tastes, and that makes my head spin with joy 🙂

Now the sorbet… I love it so much! I just got it last week, and I’m trying to save as much as I can because is SOO good! I love mango, and along with tangerine makes it so special. Is by Double Rainbow Gourmet Ice Creams and I could eat it all day haha

There is so much alternatives for vegans everywhere that the transition was the easiest thing I ever get the chance to do in my whole life. As you can see I practically just buy groceries at Lazy Acres, because it works FOR ME, but you should go anywhere you want and feel better in it. As I said before: it’s your choice. Although I gave you some pretty good alternatives for your cookies, hamburger, pizza and even ice creams… Now it’s up to you, my friend (as Tatiana would say).

Later on I will do a list of my favorite vegan places to eat, just so you know hehe

I know that most of the people that read my blog aren’t vegan or vegetarians, and my goal is to show my readers how easy is to do something good to ourselves, our planets and the animals. I became a vegan because I wanted to (after reading about it) and maybe the same thing will happen to you. This choice isn’t just about health, is about how much do YOU care about what is going on around you. They need our help!

I am doing my part, what about you?

Best Wishes!

Meet your Meat…

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”  – Paul McCartney

I must say: since I became a Vegan I can’t stop searching for informations about anything related to the matter. From tasty recipes to new shocking videos that will help me to understand a little bit more every day. I seek those facts in blogs, forums, related websites… Each small part is important, and every single day I more proud of myself for making this choice, and more disgusted with animals products. I feel so better inside of my mind and with my body that sometimes even sounds like a dream: Wow, I am free of meat! However (once again) is not about me! It’s about them…

Is your choice to watch this, but I can guarantee that you won’t feel sorry you did.

We need to help them! Animals are not our property and we must stop treading them as they were!

Let’s make a difference in the world. How about that? Once YOU choose to get control of YOUR life, and what YOU put inside of YOUR body, things will be better, for you and for them!

Best Wishes.

“Truely man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs.  We live by the death of others:  we are burial places!  I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.”  – Leonardo da Vinci

I’m a huge believer of carma (like my friend Tatiana lol), and for me everything you put into the world, you will receive it back, three times bigger. I proved this theory more than once, and I’ve seen it happening right in my face, so there’s no way I can’t deny it. And unfortunately human-kind is facing this idea. Consequences, better said!

Through the years, man release into the world the most horrible acts: against each other, but mostly damaging the environment. Thankfully (that’s how I see it) we are paying for every single one of them. Nature is fighting back, however it is in slow motion, little by little. In my conception there’s nothing wrong with the weather, WE MADE IT THAT WAY! By putting into the air all of the chemicals from factories, slaughterhouses, oil barriers… Using all the days we have to kill, destroy, pollute and extinguish every natural resource. There’s no surprise on the news! Natural disaster are happening for a reason: Mankind must be vanished from Earth, painfully!

(click on the images to read more)

Is happening all over the world, and it won’t stop!

However I like to think there’s a way out. Maybe if they quit the devastation of the forest, or shut down all of the slaughterhouses… Maybe we still have a chance. I really hope that my theory is nothing but stupid thoughts, and this bad weather is just something that soon will be over. Yet, this is not the only problem. What about all of those new diseases? Cancer, alzheimer’s, diabetes, h1n1, aids, heart complications… How to explain that?

All that I know is that I’m trying to do my part: recycling (when my “lovely” roommates don’t mix food with plastic), not wasting water, turning into a vegan… Because in the end, is all about what YOU do, not them! We are all part of this humankind, and the problem is our responsibility! Not as countries, groups, or families, but as earthlings. We all share this planet, and we must take care of it. Before is too late…

Best Wishes everyone!

First vegan grocery shop…

90% of my life’s choices are drastic and BIG! For example: if I want to be as actress, Hollywood has to be the only place; or if I want to get drunk (something that doesn’t happen very often), passing out is the only way I’ll leave the club… 😀 For me it always has been ALL or NOTHING. So being Vegan was obviously the right path for me. There’s just two options in my mind: you can choose to kill animals, or not. AT ALL!! (Because if you are vegetarian, there’re cows who are suffering so you can have your glass of milk in the morning.) So yes, for me I had to quit everything. Especially after watching “Earthlings”… I cried for 1:30min, non stopping!! If you wanna know how the animals are treated in shelters, slaughterhouses, zoos, circus, bullfighting, fur factories, medical laboratories and more, you should watch it! It will chance the way you see anything related to animals. However I have to let you know that it contains really violent scenes, so I wouldn’t show it to my children, or maybe you should prepare yourself also… For that matter, here is the trailer:

Don’t watch if you can’t handle, is YOUR choice.

So after spending the whole afternoon crying over that documentary and knowing with all of my heart that I will never eat animal related (or whatever is the right way to say this) food anymore, I went to my friend’s house so I could stop thinking about it. It was very fun, our nights are always the bests! But obviously the video and my new lifestyle didn’t left my mind and I knew that what I had to do: Grocery Shop 😀 And this is the best part. I LOVE grocery shopping. So I left my friends house in the morning, went to Blenders, order a Açaí juice with soy ice cream and soy milk (it was DELICIOUS), and got into Lazy Acres. I love that place! It’s cute, great service, very clean and completely ORGANIC! Here it is what I bought:

(veggie burger, veggie pizza, uncle eddie’s cookies & banana chips)  😀

It wasn’t a lot because here at home I already have yellow and red peppers, shitake mushrooms, normal mushrooms, wheat bread, tomatoes, cucumber, all-bran, blueberries, condiments. C’mon, it’s impossible to say that any of those things aren’t delicious! The Vegan cookies were the BESTS ones I’ve ever had, and the good thing is since doesn’t have sugar, dairy or eggs you feel so good after eating it. In addition forget about that feeling when you start eating a cookie and you can’t stop it. It’s the sugar and dairy making you feel you need them!

Although I didn’t do anything after that (just some homework), the day was great and until now I had no cravings! People make this bigger that what it is. Being Vegan is fun 😀 Oh, just one more thing: if you saw the video and wants to know what is the first step to be a vegan, go to the PETA website, it’s very helpful and makes you really want to help.

Best Wishes!

Food revolution…

STOP!!! And read it carefully.

Today I’m here to talk about the greatest idea a person had so far and this is the Jamie Olive’s “Food Revolution”. First of all I must say that he’s my favorite chef (me and mom used to always watch his show back in Brazil). And second I want to say THANK YOU, is so GOOD so watch someone doing something for America’s eating habits.

Let me tell a story about myself: the first time I came to America was in 2006 and I was 16. The place of choice was Garland, TX and it was a life changing experience in more than one way. I could write about that, yet the only thing I would like to brought it up was that I gained 45 pounds. 45 POUNDS!!! How?? If you go into Naaman Forest High School’s cafeteria, the local Walmart and fast food chains around my neighborhood, you will understand. Obviously anxiety and my own choices had an influence on it but I lived in Brazil all of my life and I was NEVER close to being fat there. I’m so sorry, but the only responsible for those pounds were THE FOOD. French fries, hamburgers, Starbucks, donuts, oversized candies, pizza, large sodas… The list is too big, and if you live in America you know every idem. After I went back to Brazil, every single pound left my body and I was hot n smoking again 🙂 However I came back… and it’s no surprise that I gained some weight, but thankfully this is California and it will not stick with me. Although it is an on going battle, just because THERE IS SO MUCH JUNK FOOD!!!!! And it’s so cheap… Yet I stopped caring about the money I was spending and now I just have salads and chicken at my place, and when I go out I simply leave my credit card at home, that easy! Because while America keeps with this bull***** food, I rather starve.

And this is what the “Food Revolution” is about: changing the way that America eats. Again: THANK YOU Jamie Oliver, my mom appreciates your effort to take junk food out of my life! 😀 I’m up for this, and it would a pleasure to be a part of his idea! And not just because of me, but for all of those Americans who suffer with obesity, diabetes and premature deaths in the family (heart disfunction, liver complications…). If YOU think that a change should happen, please: SIGN THE PETITION and I’m putting here on the side, so everyone won’t forget about it. JOIN THE CAUSE. America’s needs help!

Best Wishes!

ps: I’ve never had so much homework as this week in my whole life! I appreciate it, but it’s enough now.

What really matters…

Saturday night (7pm) and thinking about what I was doing exactly 24 hours ago, it’s an amazing joy. Yesterday’s night was so much fun that (again) I can’t understand how everything could always get better. I love my life! And it remind me that things will happen, I just have to be in the right track.

But that is not the reason I decided to post. This topic is bigger than me, and I can’t understand how some people don’t care about it. It’s not human to disregard and forget about what’s going on. We have to stick together and to fight this horrible threat. And I’m talking about the only thing that really matters: The cruelty agains our animals.

I have a puppy back in Brazil, he’s my ultimate joy and I can’t even imagine how angry I would be if someone decided to hurt him. But what about the other animals? Those ones that doesn’t have anyone to speak in behalf of them? Or to make them warm and give anything to eat. Or even worst, what about those animals that are born doomed to became food, OUR food. Should I close my eyes and pretend that nothing is happening? No! I refuse to live life so poorly. And thinking about that I added a new widget here: SocialVibe for Action for Animals. They do exactly what I was talking about. And if you agree with their project, want to help but don’t know how, this is a great way to contribute with animals, and help other people doing things that we can’t, since sometimes we are just too far away. They also are pro-vegan and if you ever thought about becoming one, in their website there’s cool link list and informations about how to join this lifestyle. I already reduced carbs from my diet, now I’m thinking seriously about cutting meat too (I already don’t eat dairies and eggs), it’s the best way to help our planet and also stay healthy.
